Greetings from Las Vegas. I’m here for a video game tournament called IPL5. I’m a spectator, not a player 🙂 It’s awesome! One of the main games is League of Legends, which I mentioned in a previous post. It’s so fun to watch eSports, especially when you’re actively playing one of the featured games. It totally makes me want to go and play more and play better!. eSports are no joke, the event is huge. Here’s a pic I took of the venue:
Kind of epic. But before all the awesome today, I woke up at 4:45AM PST (as you can tell, I was still on EST) and went to Crossfit Las Vegas for a workout. It had been two days since I had worked out last and I was feeling a little bit blah. I was happy to get up early and go there. The coach was Mike and there were about 10 people in the class. CFLV had just finished up a strength series, so today’s workout started with 15 minutes to establish your 1RM snatch and 15 minutes to establish your 1RM clean and jerk. This was sort of depressing to me because of my shoulder issues I wasn’t going to lift heavy. It was really tempting, believe me…but I went relatively light-ish for me. I worked up to a 75# snatch and then moved onto the clean and jerk. I worked that up to a 115# clean and jerk and then did a 125# clean. I just focused my efforts on technique. Mike did a great job coaching on the technique part of the workout. He even called me out on the mini-split jerk I was doing (which was basically, not splitting my feet far apart). I made up some stupid excuse about how I as all off balance because I didn’t have my OLY lifting shoes. I have no idea why I was making excuses…anyway – he put that to bed the minute he did a split jerk in the flip flops he was wearing.
Then we did some metcon…and holy fuck that sucked. We did AMRAP 5 of squat clean and jerk. I wanted to see if I could do 95#, because I wanted to see if I could do the Grace weight. I ended up with 15 reps. It definitely gave me some confidence for Grace at some point in the future because I definitely could have done it faster if I didn’t have to squat clean it.
The class ran a bit over, and I was worried about time and went to Mike and told him I had to leave. I said “I’ll do the burpees in my hotel room” and Mike smiled at me and said with a laugh “Don’t you fucking lie to me” likely knowing full well that while I didn’t have any intention of going back on my word, deep down I knew that I had a full day ahead of me and doing 60 burpees were likely not going to be a priority. I decided that I wouldn’t curl my hair today (to save time after being late) and did the 2nd half of the metcon workout – which, as you can derive – was 60 bar facing burpees for time. 60. Fuck…just thinking of them was exhausting. I banged through the first 20 and then had to break it out into much, much smaller sets. I think I lost count and either did some extras or some amount less than 60, but my time ended up being 7:13. I am still really tentative about jumping with two feet over a bar because of my ankle and combine that with the fact I was exhausted half-way through I ended up stepping over the bar a bunch of times. (I wasn’t the only one and Mike walked around “reminding” us that he wanted both feet over the bar at the same time). If I was judging, I would have no-repped half of my reps.
Here’s me and Coach Mike post-WOD. I liked him a lot because even though I was just a visitor, he didn’t let me get away with anything.
I am going to try to go tomorrow, but I don’t think my schedule will permit. I’m going to try to check out the gym here and see if I can do a homemade workout. And for your viewing pleasure, here’s the view from my hotel room balcony.
