The Good and the Bad

This is how I felt this morning during the WoD.

Getting back at it after a week of travel is difficult.  I got plenty of sleep last night, but still had troubles fully waking up.  I went to crossfit twice while traveling, but now it’s time for me to get back on my usual schedule.  I have no idea how my friend John does it.  He travels more than 50% of the year and manages to be an absolute Crossfit beast.  And he blogs about it.

Today’s workout was 2 x AMRAP 7 (5 minute rest between)

  • 7 push-ups
  • 7 KB swings
  • 14 double-unders

We started with some double under work and my ankles were not having any of it, so I did the airdyne instead for the workout and Russian KB swings because I didn’t want to piss off my shoulder.

Do you ever have those moments in a class where a coach says something really simple and it completely blows your mind?  I had one of those moments.  Jarrod was giving a demo of KB swings.  Something we do pretty often at Craic.  He stressed the importance of a straight spine (like when you’re deadlifting) and not assuming the load on your spine when lifting.  I always hunched my shoulders and my lower back would kill me.  This time … it didn’t!  I kept my spine straight and the KB swings almost seemed effortless!  Mind…blown!

Then, as I was riding that high during the WoD, Jarrod came over and *tried* to correct my push-ups.  I thought that they were great, but apparently I’m doing them with improper form, which can have longer term effects.  Practice makes permanent and practice perfect makes perfect.  I do push-ups with my elbows jutting outward, they should be more parallel with my body. I just couldn’t grasp this concept and ended up hardly being able to do one the correct way.  He suggested that I try using the bench or box to do them until I can do it correctly.  Blargh.  I really don’t want to use the bench or box again.  I worked so hard to get away from that…BUT, I’ve been doing them the wrong way and need to correct this…

My final scores were 5+14 and ?? … I was working on correcting my push-up in the 2nd AMRAP and completely lost count.

I’m still sleepy.

Aside from being tired, I’m going to start coming down from a food high.  I ate deliciousness during my business trip, but it unfortunately was full of food that I shouldn’t eat.  (Pasta, bread, corn products, etc.)  I made a commitment to myself that I was going to go back to being closer to No Bread / Paleo – except I will be eating dairy.  I need to take control of my body again.
