Oh Hai!

Hai Friends and those of you that are still cruising past my blog.  Been struggling with what to post, if anything, for awhile now.

I decided to take an un-structured hiatus from Craic / Crossfit.  My return date is yet to be set.  I’m really happy with my decision.  The pressure of trying to find workouts to do without making my shoulder worse started to really eat at me.  I can’t describe it, but in an effort to try – I just felt too much pressure (all put on myself) when I was at Crossfit and constantly being disappointed with what was going on with my frozen shoulder situation – so for my own personal well-being, I needed to take a break with no distinct end in sight.

In the meantime, I’m working to figure out other things I can do so I can stay in shape.  My friend Barb introduced me to SoulCycle – and I went again today with my other friend Julie.  While it’s not something I’m going to do all the time, I’m going to make an effort to go 1-2 times / week at the very least.  I hate cardio and classes revolving around cardio in general – but there is something about SoulCycle that makes me happy when it’s done.  We shall see.


Birthday Gym Visit

Went to PT. Progress is happening. Mobility is improving for front movement. Side and back, not so much – but step by step I guess.

Today is Niko’s birthday and instead of going to a fancy dinner, he opted to do this instead:



What a difference a year makes, eh? This time last year I was spinning my wheels convincing him that he should try Crossfit and him basically telling me it wasn’t going to happen… I guess I can be pretty persuasive. 😉

Laying Low

Went to PT yesterday.  Seeing some real progress on my shoulder mobility.  Which is a good thing to see.  I also got a fancy pulley to do shoulder work every day.  It’s super low-tech, but the technology / mechanics of it seems to have withstood the test of time.  They haven’t even upgraded the box design – that’s how confident they are in the technology 🙂

After a lot of thought and discussion, I’ve decided to take the next month off from Crossfit. My shoulder has been out of whack for so long, I am completely out of balance.  When I do workouts, the balance is so off, I inevitably injure some other part of my body.  I am going to take this next month to focus on rehabbing my shoulder and come back to Crossfit more balanced and ready to start getting back into a fit CrazyCatfitter.  This isn’t to say that I won’t be updating my blog, but just wanted to make people aware.

Also, as a side – between now and PAX East (April 11th – April 13th) I am going to be really focused on that show and prep for it.  That also has a wee bit to do with my decision as well. #priorities


On an unrelated topic, one of my bestest pals lives in San Francisco.  Post college, we lived near each other in Los Angeles. She would come over and my cat, Feynman (the orange one, for those keeping score) wasn’t particularly nice to her.  This re-enforced her hatred of cats.  Then, a couple of years ago, when I was in SF on business, we grabbed dinner and she told me about her new boyfriend.  She told me that he had two cats and that might be a deal breaker.  Since then, she has not only moved in with the boy, she has also become a crazy cat lady like me!  This is a text conversation we recently had:


Yes, we both, not knowing the other did, got some matching Vans sneakers.  Here’s a picture of them close up so you can see just how much of a Crazy Cat Lady she has become.  She loves her cats, Selah and Dr. Sax.  We FaceTime a lot so we can see each other’s cats.  #besties

Cry Baby


Big week last week.  Didn’t get a workout in other than Monday.  But we launched a game into Open Beta – and that’s a win 🙂

Went to PT a couple of times last week – Craig did some crazy and extremely painful stretching of my shoulder.  No idea why, but completely burst into tears and couldn’t stop. #cantstopwontstop  Not usually a crier, so…yea…I guess sometimes we all need a good cry?  He ordered a pulley for me to do stretches every day.  Not entirely sure of what that will entail – but picking it up later today.  Hopefully the stretchies won’t make me a cry baby again.




Had to go to the gym this morning, time to rip the band-aid off and get back to working out.  Knew that I had to take it easy on weights and stuff, but was unprepared for just how easy I would have to take it.  Like Jarrod has reminded me at times, I am not quitting crossfit anytime soon – I have as long as I need to recover – so I need to just take my time and mentally prepare myself for a slow ramp up.

I worked up to 75# for the clean practice – started using the training bar again – which is something I haven’t done in awhile.  Bicep was hurting on some of the lifts during the shrug into the rack – but overall it was okay – learning to let go faster at the top.  Decided that was the max weight I was going to go to and focus on form.  Started using that weight for the workout and that’s when things got frustrating.

2nd set of front squats, cleaned it and it pulled on my shoulder.  Radiating pain.  You know, the fun one that lasts about 15-30 seconds.  Had a small pity party and then pulled 30# off the bar and dropped to 45#.  Decided to do 12-10-10 for the front squats since it was a relatively light weight.  Okay, really light weight for me squatting. Slipped while doing ring rows and pulled my shoulder again – ouch.  Had to put chalk on the floor to keep my feet from slipping (sorry, Will and Marc – if you even read this…) Final time: 9:49

Then off to PT where I chatted with Craig about the plan for my shoulder in the coming months.  Lots of stretching.  Lots of it.  My girl, K.Jo in the 6:30AM class told me about how her mom had frozen shoulder, and while it was a long path to get back – she is golfing and 100% back to normal (it took almost a year…).  While I’m not thrilled about her recovery time, it’s good to know that this condition isn’t permanent.  No shoulder to overhead – none.  Impact on my shoulder (like burpees, etc.) are not good either while it’s so inflamed.  When the inflammation goes down, I can start moving back to controlled burpees.  #everydayislegday  Going to meet with John tomorrow to workout a plan for me and the gym.

Randomly, it smells like bacon right now.  I guess it’s time for me to stop blogging.


Let It Go…


Great movie, great song.  Not really the subject of this post. Went to see Rockett today and got a diagnosis on my shoulder. Turns out I have frozen shoulder.  Not the best diagnosis, but certainly not the worst. Likely from a combination of my injury to my shoulder, past trauma to my shoulder…and surprisingly diabetes.  (Which I have type 2).  They are unclear as to the exact reason why diabetes can be a risk factor, but about 20% of diabetics get frozen shoulder, compared to 5% of non-diabetics.  So between the two – yay!  I was destined.  Recovery definitely on the horizon (it’s not a condition that lasts forever) but it could take months, if not a year.  I finally have a diagnosis – so I guess it’s time to move forward and just let all the worrying and conjecturing go.  It is what it is, and I just have to make a plan to get better and not become a lazy bum.

Having said that, while I am being really good about my nutrition, I am very temporarily drowning my sorrows by eating a small bag of my favorite chips. #worthit
