Air-Dying – Team Workout

Love team workouts.  There’s just something about being supported by a partner that makes you want to do better.  Today, was a rowing team workout and I got to team with one of my most favorite people at Craic – BABS (Bad Ass Barbara!)  Here’s a picture of us post-WOD.  She is awesome and I’m so happy that I got to workout with her today!

The workout was a hero WoD called Tosh. We did a team version of it:

Partner Rowing TOSH
In teams of 2 complete 3 rounds each
Row 200m – rest while your partner goes
Row 400m- rest while your partner goes
Row 600m- rest while your partner goes

I did a 600m row as a warm up and when I got off the rower, my wrist started cramping up.  I was REALLY hoping that the short-ish distances would allow me to row today, but it was not the case.  I think we know where this is leading…AIR DYNE.  Per Jarrod, I progressed in 10, 20, 30 cals instead of 200m, 400m, 600m.

The 10 cals was relatively easy. I was able to go at a fast pace and complete them in about 35-40 seconds.  20 cals got a lot harder…and 30 cals I thought I was going to die.  Also, there is some strategy to what placement you choose in the workout.  If you go second (which I did) after your 600m row (or 30 cal AD) you get hardly any rest after killing yourself, as your partner is beginning the next round with the shortest portion of the workout.  By the third round, I was toast and this was the first workout where I thought I might burst into tears.  The AD decimated me today.  In addition to that, Jarrod was making his rounds during the workout and happened to come by when I was finishing up my final cycle at 30 cal.  He walked up about 10 cals into it and started “motivating” me by telling me to go faster.  He was like “the faster you peddle, the faster you’re done” and telling me to push harder.  I was wondering why he was having me all out sprint, as I had 20 cals to go – and when we I got to 17 cals, he yells “Yea, push!  Only 3 more cals!”  Turns out he thought I was going for 20 cals and that’s why he had me speed it up.  Ugh.  But no, I had 13 cals left and I thought I was going to cry.  I pushed through and fell to the floor. The push helped, as I did the last 30 cals in my best time: 2:02. Final team time: 32:04.

After I was able to gather myself together, I had someone take a pic of me on the air-dyne.  Probably one of the only times you’ll see me with a smile while I’m on it.  And as Niko will probably tell you – this is my fake smile.

First weekend before my first full week back at work.  Generally laid low all weekend, got a workout in on Saturday.  Craic is starting to do team workouts on Saturday – which are so fun!  This weekend was, in teams of three – complete the following in order, with only one partner at a time working:

  • 200 pull-ups
  • 200 kettle bell swings
  • 200 double unders
  • 200 overhead squats

I teamed with Kendyl and Tracey.  It was fantastic!  We pretty much divided stuff up equally and just busted our asses to finish as quickly as possible.  We initially scoffed at the 35 minute time cap Coach Sara gave us, but it took a long time to chip away at this workout.  Our final time was 24:56.

Today, I was just a lazy butt and sat around and watched TV all day.  Short post, as Season 3 of Downton Abbey is about to start!

2013 Begins with a WOD (but almost didn’t)

I don’t have anything deep to say for my first post of 2013.  I went to bed super late last night and woke up around 10am.  Which is the latest that I’ve slept in a very long time.  I lazed around on the couch most of the morning and then Niko and I went to grab some lunch at The Met Bar.

Last night was a lot of fun, we went to our friend’s house (the same NYE party we go to every year) – and I ate a lot of delicious, delicious food.  Mostly what my fellow Craicheads would call BREAD. Our friend Ana is just such an amazing cook, baker, and hostess…it was hard to say no.  Since I don’t drink, it was easy to say no to the alcoholic drink flavored gummies.  But I didn’t say NO to the homemade mac and cheese, cookies, sparkling apple cider, sweet potato rolls, potatoes with parmesan and garlic, or…more cookies.  I did have some NO BREAD friendly stuff like ham and roasted broccoli.  I was stuffed by the time new year’s eve rolled around.

Anyway, back to lazing around.  I did this all afternoon after lunch with no intention of going to the 4:30 class (the last class of the day).  I tried to justify it in my head, but I couldn’t really find a reason as to why I shouldn’t go and then had an entire conversation with myself about “If sitting on the couch is really how I wanted to kick off 2013?” and “Would I regret not working out later…” And at the last minute, I jumped up, changed into my workout gear and did quite possibly one of the most fun workouts that I’ve done in a long time.

It was an AMRAP 30, teams of three.  I partnered with Lori and Jayme.  I love working out with Jayme. She’s so strong and has such a great energy to workout with.  I never get to workout with her (she doesn’t really do mornings) and it seems that almost every time we do team workouts, that’s when I end up being at the gym with her.  Also, I didn’t know Lori very well and have teamed with her over this holiday break a couple of times.  Really good group of gals!  Each round consisted of rowing 30 cals, 30 push-ups, 30 KB swings.  Each team member was responsible for 10 each and no two people could be working out at the same time.  So we all started at the rower I did 10 cals, Lori rowed for 10 cals, then Jayme.  Same thing for push-ups and kb swings.   I did ring rows instead of push-ups.  I was really worried about doing a 30 minute AMRAP – but this ended up being manageable.  You’d go all out for your portion and then rest while your partners were going.  I ended up doing Russian kettle bell swings (shoulder) and did 44#.  They ended up feeling relatively light.  I love team workouts and working with Jayme and Lori was awesome.

Christmas Eve Team WOD

I was cutting it too close with going to Crossfit Lewiston, so I decided to workout this morning with the Craic crew at the 9AM class before we left for Maine. It ended up being a team WOD, teams of three. Smartly programmed as class was PACKED this morning. I modified the crap out of this team WOD. Partnered with Jayme and Carleen – two tough gals and it was a blast.

It was a AMRAP 20:
partner 1 runs 200 m while
partner 2 does amrap thrusters 105/75
partner 3 does amrap toes to bar
score equals total reps for the whole team

I ended up subbing 12 calories on the airdyne for the run (I tried a warm up run and my ankle was not having it), an on the ground toes to bar type thing for the actual toes to bar, and front squats.

We ended up going at a good clip and got around 351 or so. Jarrod had us think of an interesting name for our team, so I suggested “The Cat’s Meow” and Jayme and Carleen agreed. My knee, during the 2nd round of front squats felt like it slipped out of place. It was really scary. It only hurt after that when I straightened my leg completely and it’s not bothering me now. It scared the crap out of me when it happened. I just need to be more careful and Jarrod suggested getting some knee sleeves to keep them warm.
